Review

In Ford’s listing of pickups and SUVs, the pristine presence of the 2022 Explorer is the option that is most befitting for familial obligations. Outfitted with three spacious rows of seats along with a commodious space dedicated strictly to cargo, the Explorer is multifaceted for those with children and their related materials.

The majority of motorists will be content with the Explorer’s foundational engine – a supercharged four-cylinder that possesses 300hp – but a mixture powertrain along with a twin-turbo V6 motor are accessible as well.

What can we expect for the 2022 edition?

The listing for the Explorer now offers a novel ST-Line model, which blends the appearance of the high-calibre ST model with the more systematic supercharged powertrain. The ST-Line trim is perched on 20” wheels and sports a black accent on the exterior.

Furthermore, the cabin offers a very execution-oriented appearance too, with smooth upholstery consisting of red stitching, an athletic steering wheel, and protector plates for the door displaying the ST-Line emblem. Additionally, the Explorer’s most athletic trim is now available with RWD (rear-wheel drive).

Premium King Ranch and alloy trims get a raise to 400hp and can be armed with an additional bench seat or a couple of chairs free of charge. Moreover, the Timberline trim, which became a part of the listing a year ago, is for sale with an additional bench seat too.

Cost and Which to Buy

The mid-level trim is the superior Explorer if we’re comparing value for money. The mixture is reasonable for those who can benefit from its high EPA-ranked city mpg. We discovered the conventional supercharged motor to be adequately powerful and more productive on the freeway.

It can pull an impressive 5300lbs when armed with the towing bundle. Moreover, we also added AWD for just over $1900. Aside from that, we believe the model’s attractive stock attributes should be sufficient. These features include but are not limited to:

  • B&O audio system (12-speaker)
  • 20” wheels
  • Heated and adaptable steering wheel
  • Leather interior
  • Adjustable cruise control

In regards to pricing, on the low end of the scale is the base model starting at $34,540, and on the other end of the spectrum, you have the Platinum hybrid which goes for a cool $55,000 (estimated).

Motor, Performance, and Transmission

The Base, Limited, and XLT models arrive with a 300hp supercharged, four-cylinder motor, and it endows the Explorer with jurisdiction. For the more fast-paced drivers out there, you will be more inclined toward the King Ranch, ST, or Platinum trims, which just so happened to be fired by a 400hp, supercharged V6.

Back in 2020, a hybrid was added to the lineup. It matches a 3-litre V6 motor with an electric-powered engine for a blended output of 318hp. When appropriately armed, the Explorer has the capacity to pull as much as 5600lbs! It cruises on an RWD platform, however, AWD is discretionary. An automatic 10-speed transmission is conventional.

Real-World MPG and Fuel Economy

With its plethora of powertrain blends, the Explorer has differing EPA rankings for fuel economy. The hybrid trim with rear drive is ranked as the most economical of them all, with approximations of as much as 27 mpg city and 29 mpg freeway.

Incorporating AWD minimizes the hybrid's rankings by 3 or 4 mpg. We assessed one on our 75-mph freeway route, where it commanded only 24 mpg. Similarly, the 400-hp Explorer ST trim garnered 25 mpg in our assessment, which battered its EPA ranking by 1. Moreover, we tested the four-cylinder Explorer equipped with AWD. The government assesses that the model will garner 20 mpg city and 27 freeway; however, we realized 28 mpg.

Infotainment and Connectedness

Outfitted with an 8” infotainment touchscreen, this comes as standard equipment. Also included is the Android Auto ability as well as Apple CarPlay system. Both appealing and receptive. However, to claim the discretionary 10” perpendicularly designed screen, you’ll have to incur an upgrade to the more high-priced trims.

But each trim offers navigation that is voice-triggered in addition to a back-seat recreation system.

Driver-Assistance Attributes and Safety Features

Each Exporter is supplied with conventional driver-assistance machinery and provides a self-reliant parking assistance system. Key safety attributes include:

  • Standard forward-collision alert and automated emergency braking
  • Standard blind-spot monitoring and rear-cross-traffic warning
  • Standard lane-departure alert and lane-keeping assistance

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Ford offers full powertrain warranties that are quite competitive with plans offered by other companies. Included in the plans are:

  • Limited warranty covers 36,000 miles (or three years)
  • Powertrain warranty covers 60,000 miles (or five years)
